Acireale

The name of Acireale, as all the other towns' names of the neighbourhood, comes from the legend of Aci, a shepherd killed by Polyphemus jealous of Galatea's love. Acireale, conquered by Sicans, Greeks and ancient Romans, was destroyed by a terrible earthquake in 1693. Reconstruction was made in Baroque style so that nowadays Acireale is considered one of the most important tourist destination.

Acireale's carnival is very famous, characterized by floats made of papier mâché or flowers.
