Alcantara Gorges

Alcantara gorges can be 25 m high and large from 2 m to 5 m. The natural canyon was not created over thousands of years by water ; probabliy earthquakes broke old basaltic lakes so that the river could penetrate into.

The most impressive and famous gorge is 6 km long but just 3 km are viable.

The particularity of this gorge is the structure of its walls made of lava slowly cooled that can create strange shapes similar to prism, pentagons and hexagons that remind the molecolar structure of the materials they are made of.
